Students are required to sit examinations in seven of the discipline specific modules in the programme.  Practice examinations together with module solutions are contained in the course manuals. These reflect the level of difficulty of the actual final examination and provide the student with the means to assess their readiness for the examination.

Applying for the Examination

  1. Only Heriot-Watt University matriculated students can apply for examinations.

  2. There are two examination diets each year.  Please see the programme above.

  3. You must complete the Examination Request Form before the appropriate application deadline.

  4. Students are reminded to refer to the University’s examination regulations contained within the booklet “General Information for First Degree Students studying by Supported Distance Learning Mode”.

  5. You should indicate your nearest city or large town with a University or British Council Office. This will give us an indication of where you are and how far you are prepared to travel.  You can provide more than one choice.  Please do not attempt to contact the centre yourself.

  6. Please make sure that you completed the form correctly.

  7. Payment for the examination should be through a cheque drawn on a UK bank, or a bank draft drawn on a UK bank, or by credit card.  Please make sure that you quote your card number in full on the form and that the expiry date is at least two months after the application deadline.

  8. All students are entitled to 3 re-assessment opportunities at Grade D or below.  No re-assessment opportunities will be allowed at Grades A, B or C to obtain a higher grade.  The Board of Examiners will consider both the first assessment and re-assessment results.

The Examination Fee

For one examination sat a particular diet cost is £65.  For two or more examinations sat a particular diet cost is £100.

Prior to the Examination

Prior to the examination you will receive an “Examination Arrangements Letter”, detailing your examination location and time.

At the Examination

Please remember to take your Matriculation card and “Examination Arrangements Letter”. As they must be presented at the examination centre on the day of each examination for which you have been registered.  Failure to do so will mean that you will be unable to sit the examination.

Method of Payment

Cheques/postal orders should be made payable to Heriot-Watt University and crossed.  Only MasterCard, Access, Visa and Switch are acceptable.  Please note that for the use of a Credit Card a charge of 1.75% must be added to the payment, this is the cost of processing to the University.

Examinations will be held in centres close to the location of the student.  Whilst some travel may be required, the University endeavours to arrange examinations as near to the locations requested by students as is practical.  These centres will be arranged when the application for examination is received.  The University has experience in arranging these examination centres in countries all over the world.  Examinations for other distance learning courses run by the University have been held in more that 300 centres, located in over 130 countries worldwide.
