Employment Opportunities
Employment prospects for ICIT students are wide and varied. Of the over 200 ICIT students that have graduated to date 98% of former students with known destinations are in active employment or research (8% moving on to Ph.D. research). Over 70% of our graduates are employed directly in energy or environmental related posts. Other students use the courses as a springboard into the wider world of business and commerce. Precise destinations tend to depend on a combination of students interests and experience / qualifications prior to the course. Some students do however manage to use the course to make remarkable changes in career direction. One former student entering the course with a back ground in local television journalism and moved from ICIT to secure a position with the United Nations and then as Director of Environmental Services in the States of Jersey.
The largest single destination is into the field of energy/environmental consultancy including positions in the UK, Norway, New Zealand, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Canada. The next most significant group are students that leave ICIT to join large corporations often energy companies or utilities either working in environmental units or as project managers. Some students are less adventurous (in terms of destination at least) with a small number deciding to stay in Orkney taking employment, or etablishing businesses in environmental constancy, renewable energy developers or public sector development control.
