Some additional comments from former students
Mark Wemyss "The Marine Resource Management (MRM) allowed me the perfect opportunity to change my career direction by undertaking the 1 year MSc course. The teaching and support I experienced at ICIT was higher than I have ever seen in previous courses. I mainly found this to be down to the student to staff ratio, and the very friendly and approachable manner that is every part ICIT and Orkney. I very much doubt you would regret undertaking a postgraduate course at ICIT..."
John Stevenson "Studying in Orkney was just great, the place is unique and has a character all of its own with people to match. The course encouraged involvement with local communities enabling a full and practical understanding of the importance and place of local marine issues in national and international marine context. The year flew by and the combination of place and study was a tremendous experience and one I'm glad not to have missed."
Mark Jennison (Project Manager Scottish National Heritage) "for me there was more happening in Stromness than Edinburgh, if you are a water sports enthusiast then your imagination is your limit.... anyone can study in Edinburgh, to experience Orkney has to be a chance that is not often available".
Sara Turner (Self employed Diving Instructor) "..best diving in Europe.. [Studying]... the library has lots of literature and Ann [our previous librarian] can order you [most things] in a couple of days".
James Masters (Marine Warden) [studying in Orkney] ".. no problem. As good as Edinburgh with possibly more time for individuals. [Orkney] "..Amazing scenery, 'wicked' surf, brilliant diving, fishing, good pubs..... brilliant place - best six months of my life in many ways".
Lucy Conway (Marine Biologist, British Antarctic Survey) ".. access to Stromness staff, the Old Academy and computers was good. Obviously access to Riccarton staff was more limited, but never posed a real problem.... I learnt to canoe and played lots of squash as well as indoor hockey and football. All the locals were really friendly and seemed to like having students around".
Jon Parr (Marine Estate Manager, The Crown Estate) "Chance to study somewhere completely different - effectively we had a massive field study on our door step. [Social life] excellent despite missing the Edinburgh festival I think Orkney compensated with the folk festival and the sports available".
Jason Wilson (Environmental Manager, BP Ltd.) [Stromness has] "one main cobbled street with traditional shops, a warren of alleyways and friendly locals. The island itself is uncluttered and spacious with a multitude of attractions....
"Damian Goh (Research Assistant, University of Hong Kong) "The locals are very friendly, you spend 5 minutes buying your groceries and 10 minutes chatting ... you'll probably never have another opportunity like this".
Sara Jones (Consultant, AURIS Environmental) "...access to staff was very easy and they were very approachable.... my social life was brilliant, the folk festival, even for people who are not 'folkies' should not be missed... a unique experience".
There are many student activities available in Orkney, for details see the student activities page
